What is our Mandate

FACS-Elgin is a children's aid society, mandated under Ontario's Child and Family Services Act to protect children under the age of 16 from child abuse and neglect. The agency is a private non-profit corporation formed and operated by concerned citizens in Elgin County and funded by the Province of Ontario.

Each year, FACS-Elgin protection workers investigate hundreds of cases of alleged child abuse, neglect, abandonment, and severe conflicts between parents and children. In cases where a child's immediate safety is at risk, the agency begins an investigation at once. In many instances, the protection worker will offer follow-up counselling and referral services to address identified problems.

Follow-up services are often provided by a mutual agreement between the protection worker and the family. In cases where an agreement cannot be reached, FACS-Elgin may request the intervention of the Ontario Court, Provincial Division, to order a plan of service. If the protection worker feels that a child cannot be protected in his or her own home, the child will be placed in a foster home or other place of safety.
